Cheap flights?

I need to know any tips or tricks you can think of. I already use a host of web sites, I have flexible travel days and am looking at the %26quot;off%26quot; days of the week. The travel time is months from now. Anything I%26#039;m missing? Oh, car rental too. I don%26#039;t have AAA, but I work for the government and have a costco membership.

Not all sources and strategies are best for all routes. What is your specific itinerary?

Ok, coast-to-coast (USA?). If so, then what you%26#039;re probably missing is the fact that airfare consolidators sometimes have very good coast-to-coast offers that you can%26#039;t get other places. Not to push one site, but Cheaptickets.com seems to have this type fare more often than others. (Airfare consolidators are probably better-known for international airfares, especially in peak season).

The other thing you might be missing, if you%26#039;re like most, is how to find the cheapest published fare on a route, and how to time your flight purchase. Farecompare.com is good to help you track them down, and it rates fares with stars (1 star = not so good, 4 starts= buy now!). It also shows a graph with fare history on the route, and lists the most recent fare alerts it sent when fare on this route dropped. Although it can not predict future sales, it does give you all the info you would need to make an informed decision. Good rule of thumb: 21-75 days advance for domestic flights.

Using Farecompare to track down cheapest fares, you don%26#039;t have to worry about which day of the week, staying over Saturday night, etc. etc., because it starts by showing you the absolute cheapest with all of those conditions, then shows you what%26#039;s available in calendar format,so you click the fare on the calendar to check availability.

Allegiant Air and Southwest aren%26#039;t available for 3rd party booking, so you have to check those on separately. Allegiant isn%26#039;t much good unless you%26#039;re headed to Vegas or Florida, however.

You already listed some good ones. Here are some more that I hope help:

-- Sometimes the internet is cheaper, sometimes the phone operators are cheaper, and sometimes travel agents are cheaper. Check out all three to make sure you get the best deal.

-- Roundtrip tickets are cheaper than one-ways. Consider buy a roundtrip even if you are not going to use the return portion of it.

-- Try to book as far in advance as possible. Generally try to purchase your tickets at least 21 days in advance of departure. Many airlines also have specials requiring three-, seven- or 14-day advance purchase.

-- Choose the same airline for all legs of your itinerary whenever possible so you can take advantage of all connecting and round-trip airfares.

-- Try to fly on the least popular days: Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday.

-- Remember that Saturday night stays are usually required for most bargain airfares.

-- Try to select the least popular flight times: mid-morning or late evening.

-- Check with discount airlines for cheaper fares.

-- In general, the cheapest airfares are available in the spring and summer.

-- Consider booking tickets that come with restrictions because they also come with a cheaper price tag.

-- Consider using alternate airports near your desired airport. The extra drive can save you hundreds of dollars.

-- Be as flexible as possible with your dates.
