Whats the difference between updating name servers and transfering a domain? I'm looking to host a website

I want to keep my domains registered with company X (cheap) and host the accompanying sites with company Y. I have been given the option of updating the nameservers with the people i registered the web name with, or to have the domain registered with the hosting company. Whats the difference in the options? The hosting company is good for hosting but expensive for renewing domain names. Thanks

You should update the name server information with the registrar to the new hosting company%26#039;s server otherwise no one will be able to visit your website by using the domain name besides your email will never reach destination.

The Internet works with IP addresses, the use of names for computers is for human understanding and benefit. The name server performs a name to number mapping for each computer on the Internet.

Updating name server will only point the domain to the new hositng company but will not change the registrar (in your case the company X), but if you transfer the domain then you will not have to worry about the name server updating as then the new registrar (company Y) will update the name server entry for your domain in its data base.

Check with Company Y about their name server then go to Company X and update the name server information in their database.

Registrars are where you register your URL name. Your name servers are entered on the registrars sight.

The Web host is the company that hosts your web page. You upload all of your URL files to the host.

Some registrars are also hosts. Whenever you change hosts you need to change your name server on the registrars sight.
Reply:That can be done. Have name on 1 company and hosting on another company.

Find out the Name servers for the domain company and input that informantion in name servers on the hosting company account.

Reply:I register domains with ipower (got privacy free) and then host with hostmonster.

If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months%26#039; time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.

I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.

Domains

Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.

Reply:Updating name servers points your domain to the host that will be hosting your website. Tranferring the domain registers the domain with the new company and the name servers point to the host by default. Why not just find a company that has cheap domains and hosting? Check out http://www.doggydomains.com You can transfer a domain for $1.99 when you get the hosting for $5.95 a month.
